Slumping Equity Indexes in Red for the Year

After surging ahead earlier this week, most equity indexes fell
sharply going into the weekend. It wasn't a great week for most
equity fund investors, and a look at 1-year index returns shows
pain has been the norm over the last 12 months. As a result, fund
investors have been stuffing cash into conservative fixed-income
funds and cooling on stock funds. Lipper reported that S&P
500 index funds experienced outflows of $900 million in May.
The following index performance data was included in Standard
& Poor's latest weekly market analysis.
